Upon its release on August 31, 2012, Mugamoodi received mixed to positive reviews from critics. Critics praised the ambitious attempt, the VFX, the action sequences, and Jiiva's performance. However, some found the second half to be lengthy and its attempts at incorporating "Hollywood-inspired" drama to be at odds with the otherwise grounded setting.
