When applied to addiction, the social model encourages us to look at structural determinants of health. Instead of viewing addiction solely as a neurological defect, the social model examines how poverty, historical trauma, lack of housing, and inadequate social safety nets drive substance use as a coping mechanism. Furthermore, the social model highlights how social exclusion—such as the difficulty a person with a criminal record related to drugs faces in securing employment—creates a vicious cycle that makes recovery infinitely harder. By shifting the blame from the individual to the environment, the social model demands societal accountability. d a s s 341
